Service Activities
Serving visual journalism, RIT and the Greater Rochester Community

In 2016 I worked with five fellow RIT faculty members to develop the Digital Photography Workshop for High School Students. This one-week intensive summer workshop immerses students into a wide range of experiences using photography. Professors representing the advertising, fine art, photojournalism, visual media, and photographic sciences lead this course and work collaboratively to create a unique and exciting one-week workshop exploring the possibilities.

Through daily projects, lectures, demos and daily discussions the instructors will assist students in learning basic technical skills along with basic photographic skills, visual story-telling techniques and much more including high speed and stroboscopic photography. At the end of the week, students build a self published book that featuring the photography and writing from each student.

High school participants travel to RIT from across the New York State and as far away as California and Italy.

NPD
National Portfolio Days

It has been an honor to represent RIT and the College of Art & Design during three National Portfolio Days since 2016. I have attended the annual events, held in multiple locations across the United States, Canada and Europe, in Chicago and New York. It's always interesting to learn about high school students, offer feedback on their work, and share information about the RIT experience.

NPPA
National Press Photographers Association at RIT

ritpj_outlined_text.png

Rochester Institute of Technology has an award-winning student chapter of the National Press Photographers Association. I have been involved with RIT NPPA since my earliest days on campus in 2013, regularly participating in student chapter meetings, making special topic presentations to students, and serving as the picture editing category coordinator for their annual “What We Do” contest.

In August 2021, I began serving as the faculty advisor. Chapter attendance and leadership were lagging in the wake of 18 months of COVID-19 and institutional knowledge about this campus club was waning. I assisted the existing executive board with governance issues and helped them create in-person fall programming. The club hosted regular student-judged picture-of-the-month competitions, zoom sessions with working photojournalists, and a joint meeting with the Ohio University student chapter.

In February 2022, a new e-board was elected. In addition to creating regular programming, they successfully planned and executed a return to the annual What We Do student photography contest, which had not been held since spring 2019. This group is working hard to reestablish the club's social media presence and continue to grow student participation. They are committed to building a respectful community of mutual support and encouragement.
